Can your posture make you feel bad?
In short, yes; your posture alone can make you feel bad, but how?
Your posture forms part of a feedback system that helps to regulate your emotions. If you are feeling happy then your posture will be relaxed, open, and approachable. Whereas, if you are feeling fearful, then your posture will be tense, closed and unapproachable.
The main point here is that posture changes automatically in response to how you feel, generally beyond your awareness. Therefore, your body would have closed BEFORE you became aware of a bad feeling and this is because your body leads your mind.
This means, that it is easier than you think, (because thinking is not actually involved) to change your mood JUST by changing your posture.
So, no need to think positive, say affirmations or try to ‘fake it until you make it’ because that’s top down processing.
All you need to do is open up your body, which is bottom up processing. Sit with your feet on the floor, a hand on each knee, your back straight and your head facing either straight ahead or up towards the ceiling, eyes open and smile 😀
When your body is open, you automatically experience thoughts and feelings of an open state.
Whereas, if you are already relaxed but then close your body, sitting with slumped shoulders, head down, hands and legs crossed and eyes closed, your thoughts and feelings would automatically become more negative.
Get out of your mind and into your body!
